Tombstone

In the western boomtown of Tombstone, Arizona, crime rules the streets. The Shootist

Dances With Wolves

Rewarded for his heroism in the Civil War, Lt. John Dunbar (Kevin Costner) wants to see the American frontier before it is gone. The Hateful Eight

El Dorado

The Outlaw Josey Wales

Rio Bravo

John Wayne and Dean Martin star as a Western sheriff and his recovering alcoholic deputy who, along with a small ragtag group of men and women, refuse to release a suspected murderer from jail, even though they are surrounded and greatly outnumbered by gunmen.

The Alamo (2004)

Where myth meets history. Where legend meets reality. The roads cross at San Antonio de Bexar and the small, ruined mission there: the Alamo. In the spring of 1836, nearly 200 Texans - men of all races who believed in the future of Texas - held the fort for 13 days under siege by General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, ruler of Mexico and commander of its forces. Led by three men - the young, brash Col. William Travis; the violent, passionate James Bowie; and the larger than-life living legend David Crockett - the Texans and their deeds at the Alamo would pass into history as General Sam Houston's rallying cry for Texas independence and into legend for their symbolic significance. Historical action western detailing the 1835-36 Texas revolution before, during, and after the famous siege of the Alamo (February 23-March 6, 1836) where 183 Texans (American-born Texans) and Tejanos (Mexican-born Texans) commanded by Colonel Travis, along with Davey Crockett and Jim Bowie, were besieged in an abandoned mission outside San Antonio by a Mexican army of nearly 2,000 men under the personal command of the dictator of Mexico, General Santa Anna, as well as detailing the battle of San Jacinto (April 21, 1836) where General Sam Houston's rag-tag army of Texans took on and defeated Santa Anna's army leading to the independence of Texas. "The Alamo" retells the events surrounding that battle from multiple perspectives on both sides of the Texas-Mexico border. John Lee Hancock (The Rookie) directs a cast that includes Patrick Wilson (Lt. Col. William Travis), Jason Patric (James Bowie), Billy Bob Thornton (David Crockett), and Dennis Quaid (Gen. Sam Houston).

City Slickers

What happens when three ordinary guys spend two weeks learning how to be real-life cowboys? That’s the question (and the fun) in City Slickers, the biggest box office comedy of 1991. Starring Billy Crystal, Daniel Stern and Bruno Kirby, the movie also earned an Academy Award for Jack Palance as Curly, the grizzled trail guide who knows the secret of life (spoiler alert: it’s just “one thing.”) So saddle up, hit the trail and come along for “the rowdiest western jokefest since Blazing Saddles” (Rolling Stone). Sharp-eyed viewers will also spot 10-year-old Jake Gyllenhaal, in his big screen debut, as Crystal’s son.

The Ox-Bow Incident

Henry Fonda and Henry Morgan star in this 1943 Best Picture Oscar® Nominee about justice – and injustice – on the wild frontier. Two men (Fonda and Morgan) who ride into a town plagued by cattle rustling are recruited into a posse that aims to lynch three potentially innocent men accused of the crimes. It’s soon clear that vengeance could prevail as rationality faces off against mob mentality.

True Grit (2010)

Following the murder of her father by hired hand Tom Chaney, 14-year-old farm girl Mattie Ross sets out to capture the killer. To aid her, she hires the toughest U.S. marshal she can find, a man with "true grit," Reuben J. "Rooster" Cogburn. Mattie insists on accompanying Cogburn, whose drinking, sloth, and generally reprobate character do not augment her faith in him. Against his wishes, she joins him in his trek into the Indian Nations in search of Chaney. They are joined by Texas Ranger LaBoeuf, who wants Chaney for his own purposes. The unlikely trio find danger and surprises on the journey, and each has his or her "grit" tested.

The Assassination of Jesse James By the Coward Robert Ford

The names ricochet through Western lore. Jesse James (Brad Pitt) was the most notorious outlaw of his time, wanted by the law in 10 states yet celebrated as a Robin Hood in newspapers and dime novels. Teenaged Robert Ford (Casey Affleck) idolized Jesse, sought his friendship, rode with him. It wasn’t enough. The up-and-comer wanted his shot at fame. And when he got it, he took it. Pitt gives a volcanic, charismatic performance as Jesse in this saga of celebrity and obsession adapted from Ron Hansen’s historical novel by director Andrew Dominik (Chopper). “They’re all lies,” Jesse says of the stories surrounding him. Maverick

In one of the most anticipated movies of 1994, boxoffice superstar Mel Gibson ("Lethal Weapon," et. al.) and two-time Academy Award-winner Jodie Foster ("The Accused," "Silence of the Lambs") are a dapper gambler and a seductive con woman in this slick Western based on the classic TV series. James Garner ("Murphy"s Romance," TV's "Rockford Files") -- the original Maverick -- James Coburn ("The Magnificent Seven," "Young Guns II"), Graham Greene ("Northern Exposure") and a slew of country singers co-star in this film by Richard Donner ("Superman," "Lethal Weapon" trilogy). The New York Times calls this "fast, funny, full of action...[it's] "Lethal Weapon" meets "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid." The Hollywood Reporter calls it "a fast-shuffling escapade of antic wit...a delightfully appealing, brainy comedy...[a] royal flush" and Variety says it's "exuberant...a whole new generation is about to discover the charm, wit and fun of Maverick."

The Gunfighter

3:10 to Yuma

Jeremiah Johnson

Hostiles

The Hangman (1959)

U.S. Marshall Mackenzie “Mac” Bovard (Robert Taylor) has a penchant for catching outlaws and delivering his own brand of justice, hence his nickname “The Hangman”. They also are accused of bank robbery. And they "enlist" in the army, and burn down the fort. Amid all this the army is besieged by someone stealing their supplies.

Friendly Persuasion

A devout Southern Indiana Quaker family attempts to resist the call to arms during the Civil War, but their pacifism is sorely tested by the events that engulf them in this classic film directed by William Wyler ("Ben Hur," "The Best Years of Our Lives").
