No Way Out

No Way Out

A riveting new read that will thrill you from #1 New York Times bestselling author Fern Michaels, perfect for fans of Nora Roberts, Rachel Caine, and J.D. Robb.

Ellie Bowman barely remembers the incident that put her into a coma. When she awoke, filled with unease, all she knew for certain was that her boyfriend, Rick, was missing. She knew she needed to get away from her old life and recover in safety. With the proceeds of a video game she helped develop, Ellie starts over in rural Missouri, working from her cottage and trusting no one except her friend and business partner.

Yet even in this quiet small town, it’s impossible to completely isolate herself. Especially when a curious eight-year-old boy, smitten with Ellie’s pup, stops by every day to talk to him over the fence. Little by little, Ellie is being drawn back into the world through the neighbors and community around her, realizing that everyone has their own fears and obstacles to contend with.

But when Ellie hears that Rick has resurfaced, her nightmares return, and with them, small snippets of memory. No one has heard from Rick since before the incident, so why is he back now? Ellie wants to move forward with her life, but first she must find the courage to look into her past, no matter what she finds there...

Reviews
  • Not good in my opinion

I found the plot very slow with too many unneeded POV characters for a story mostly set in one neighborhood.

  • Couldn’t finish book.

The story was great but got to a place where the same two pages were repeated until the end of the book and it never let me read the rest of the story. Very disappointed that and wish I hadn’t bought the book.

  • Disappointing Fern Michaels book.

I usually love her books, especially The Sisterhood, but the ending of this one was “meh”. It started out interestingly enough, with the heroine, Libby, recovering from a traumatic brain injury that left her with amnesia about what happened. She just knows there is someone to fear, so she goes to major lengths to change her identity and provide high tech security in her new home several states from where it happened. She doesn’t even tell her mother or her best friend where she is, and becomes a recluse for two years, never even going out in her yard. When her ex boyfriend contacts her friend’s husband asking for money, she starts to remember the events that led to her injury. She knows her boyfriend had pushed her, and although he tried to keep her from falling, he left her for dead without calling 911. So now she assumes he’s trying to find her to finish the job. Then interspersed with her story, the author tells us about all her neighbors and their stories, including a woman who gets a temporary restraining order against her abusive, alcoholic husband (who ends up cleaning up his act, although she still plans to divorce him). Ho hum. When the boyfriend finally comes to her house, the neighbors manage to restrain him, and Libby has him arrested. He protests that all he wanted was to apologize for leaving her after the accident, but she doesn’t know whether to believe him or not, and presses charges for the assault. That’s it. We are left hanging and don’t know whether he’s telling the truth or not. Very disappointing ending. Wouldn’t recommend.
