As Time Goes By

The #1 New York Times bestselling “Queen of Suspense” Mary Higgins Clark crafts a thrilling mystery in which a news reporter develops an interest in her birth parents just as she is assigned to cover the high-profile trial of a woman accused of murdering her wealthy husband.

Television journalist Delaney Wright is on the brink of stardom when she begins covering a sensational murder trial. She should be thrilled with the story of her career, but her growing desire to locate her birth mother consumes her thoughts. When Delaney’s friends Alvirah Meehan and her husband Willy offer to look into the mystery surrounding her birth, they uncover a shocking secret they do not want to reveal.

On trial for murder is Betsy Grant, widow of a wealthy doctor who has suffered from Alzheimer’s for eight years. When her once-upon-a-time celebrity lawyer urges her to accept a plea bargain, Betsy refuses: she will go to trial to prove her innocence.

Betsy’s stepson, Alan Grant, bides his time nervously as the trial begins. His substantial inheritance hangs in the balance—his only means of making good on payments he owes his ex-wife, his children, and increasingly angry creditors.

As the trial unfolds and the damning evidence against Betsy piles up, Delaney is convinced that Betsy is not guilty and frantically tries to prove her innocence. A true classic from Mary Higgins Clark, As Time Goes By is a thrilling read by “the mistress of high tension” (The New Yorker).

  • As time goes by

As a fan of Mary Higgins Clark I have read many books over many years. This one is a mishmash of plots from other novels. The court trial didn’t give opportunity to keep me on edge as the author has always done. Hope she wasn’t sick but understand if she was overtired.

  • Unrealistic and predictable

I've loved reading Mary Higgins Clark since I was a young girl. I had high expectations for this book given the four star review. This was the most disappointing read of my summer. The plot line was incredibly unrealistic and it was predictable from beginning to end. Don't expect for a surprising twist like many of her other books.

  • HO-HUM

So many characters, I had to hit search on most pages to track them. Haven't read one of her books in a while, but thought I'd try this one. It was pretty much the same as all of her others. Corny, predictable, totally cardboard cutout people who do not speak or behave like any people I've ever known. So many unbelievable incidents to tie everything into a pretty little package with a bow on it. Couldn't stop yawning while reading - my husband even commented on it! Skip this one.

  • A fan since the beginning

I have been "hooked" on Mary Higgins Clark's novels since reading "Where Are the Children" many years ago when it was first published. I thought that it was a non fiction account of a famous child kidnapping case at the time! I have read all of her books and eagerly look forward to the latest one. "As Time Goes By" is excellent. The author always includes current vital issues in her stories. Discussion of the opioid epidemic is throughout, calling attention to a disturbing problem in our nation. Keep writing, Ms. Clark and I will keep reading your stories!
